Following nearly three years of extensive renovations, the San Diego California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be rededicated this weekend by President D. Todd Christofferson.
President Christofferson, second counselor in the faith’s First Presidency, will rededicate the San Diego California Temple this Sunday, Aug. 23, per a church press release.
The temple’s rededication will be broadcast and rebroadcast to all church units in the temple district at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
The San Diego temple was originally dedicated in 23 sessions in April 1993. In July 2023 it was closed for renovations.
“May thy watchcare be over this, thy holy house,” reads the temple’s original dedicatory prayer. “Preserve it from storm and tempest, from the tremblings of the earth, and most importantly from any defiling hand of man.”
President Gordon B. Hinckley and President Thomas S. Monson, who were serving as first and second counselors in the church’s First Presidency at the time of the initial dedication, presided over the 23 dedicatory sessions.
“People all over the world long for what you now have,” President Hinckley told sessiongoers then. “Brothers and sisters, be grateful.”
The San Diego temple was first announced in April 1984, and once built, it became the third Latter-day Saint temple in California.
The newly renovated San Diego California Temple still stands as a four-story building of about 58,000 square feet.
Renovations included refreshing the exterior of the temple and landscaping. The renovations will also help accessibility and improve patron experience.
The temple’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system was also upgraded, and the roof was improved, according to a church press release published in June. The art glass, carpet, lighting and furnishings were also replaced.
The San Diego California Temple is one of 12 announced temples in California and will continue serving the state’s nearly 730,000 Latter-day Saints once rededicated.
The public was invited to tour the renovated temple structure from June 18 through July 11.
