One day after a deadly torrent of water and mud swept through communities near the Nepal-China border, the Asia Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expressed its condolences and issued a statement of solidarity for those affected.
“We are deeply saddened by the devastating disaster that has affected communities across Nepal and China,” Elder Kelly R. Johnson, Elder David L. Buckner and Elder Wan-Liang Wu of the church’s Asia Area Presidency wrote Thursday.
“Our prayers are with all those who have lost loved ones, been injured, or been displaced as a result of this tragedy, as well as with the emergency responders, relief workers, and volunteers who are serving tirelessly to care for those in need.”
The flash flooding in Nepal and Tibet, an autonomous region of China, occurred following a glacier collapse in the Himalayan region.
As of Thursday, the floods have killed more than 360 people and left more than 1,400 missing, according to The Associated Press. Rescue teams and military helicopters are searching for missing people along the Nepal-China border.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is assessing opportunities to provide relief to those affected as they “begin the challenging journey of recovery and rebuilding,” the Asia Area Presidency wrote.
“As recovery efforts continue, we pray for the safety, strength, and resilience of all those affected and for the swift restoration of impacted communities.”
