Cheerios is providing an upgrade to the cereal experience that cereal lovers have been requesting for years.

The General Mills brand teamed up with Ziploc to debut Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal, a resealable bag inside the classic cereal box.

“General Mills has received letters, emails and DMs asking for an easier way to reseal a cereal box, and we decided it was time to partner with the ultimate freshness brand: Ziploc,” said Emilie Knox, vice president and business unit director for Cheerios at General Mills, in a statement, per USA Today.

“Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they’ve been asking for, making the whole routine easier and more enjoyable,” she said.

A specifically designed seal

Ziploc crafted a design specifically for the cereal bag.

“Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal is an exciting new expression of what Ziploc Brand can do — bringing our resealable freshness expertise directly into the Cheerios package and Ziploc Brand into the pantry in an entirely new way,” Ziploc said in a statement, per USA Today.

A staggering 90% of “cereal eaters take additional steps to preserve freshness after opening a box, including using clips, clothespins and cereal containers,” according to a 2025 survey published on Fox News.

“Hundreds of thousands” of Cheerios eaters have requested the resealable option, per the release.

Cereal consumption in America

The arrival of the upgrade comes at a time when fewer Americans are consuming cereal.

“From 2021 to 2026, American cereal purchases dropped from nearly 2.5 billion boxes per year to 2.1 billion, a 13 percent decrease,” Inc. reported.
