I am finding it difficult to come up with a credible defense of President Trump caught dead violating 52 USC 3010 (soliciting something of value from a foreign national in connection with a federal election). The president and his Republican allies are reverting to the same diversionary tactic made throughout the Mueller investigation; namely, that the Democrats are neglecting their duty as responsible legislators by wasting time on an impeachment inquiry instead of solving more pressing issues facing the nation.

First, an impeachment inquiry concerning a renegade president is a pressing issue requiring immediate and concerted attention. Second, the claim House Democrats haven’t been simultaneously addressing other essential national issues is totally bogus.

The Democratic-controlled House has passed over 250 bills that have often languished at the feet of Mitch McConnell who refuses to bring such bills up for a vote in the Senate until he gets approval from President Trump, thus essentially weakening the separation between the executive and legislative branches.

The ignored Democrat House bills have included infrastructure, health care, immigration, civil rights, gun control, environment, military/foreign affairs and numerous other significant national priorities.

It’s the Republicans, not Democrats, who are abrogating their legislative obligation.
