Expect memes to take the over the internet following President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony on Monday. The spotlight could shine on anything from the “tech bros” sitting in prominent spots or the fashion choices of elected officials, like Sen. Bernie Sanders’ viral picture from 2021, where he was captured sporting oversized mittens.

The 2021 photo, an endearing one, didn’t focus on President Joe Biden, the star of the day. Sanders sat on a folding chair in the cold January air, arms and legs crossed, wearing a brown coat.

Sanders, I-Vt., was edited into movie scenes, famous paintings and even on the moon, right next to the American flag planted by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

Jen Ellis, a Vermont elementary school teacher, is credited with making the mittens. Her side business is crafting such items from recycled wool, and has written a book called, “Bernie’s Mitten Maker.”

In a recent interview, she said the photo came at a “fraught time.”

“Our country was really bitterly divided at the time, and still, but it was just a moment of levity that I think people needed,” she said.

“I think one of the greatest impacts that you can make is just to be kind,” Ellis added. “I also hope that we can find a way to stop vilifying people who we disagree with” and that “we have more things that make us laugh, not at each other, but with each other.”

Not only did the mitten photo provide comedic relief, the memes also helped raise $1.8 million for charity over the course of five days. The “Chairman Sanders” merchandise with the photo sold within 30 minutes, according to The Associated Press.

“Jane and I were amazed by all the creativity shown by so many people over the last week, and we’re glad we can use my internet fame to help Vermonters in need,” Sanders said in a statement. “But even this amount of money is no substitute for action by Congress, and I will be doing everything I can in Washington to make sure working people in Vermont and across the country get the relief they need in the middle of the worst crisis we’ve faced since the Great Depression.”

Sanders, 83, won a fourth term representing Vermont in 2024, making him the longest serving Independent senator in Congress.

Sanders hasn’t confirmed whether he will be attending President-elect Trump’s inauguration on Monday. But should he decide to, his mittens will come in handy. Trump’s inauguration will be moved indoors because of dangerously cold temperatures.

“I have ordered the Inauguration Address, in addition to prayers and other speeches, to be delivered in the United States Capitol Rotunda, as was used by Ronald Reagan in 1985, also because of very cold weather,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“We will open Capital One Arena on Monday for LIVE viewing of this Historic event, and to host the Presidential Parade. I will join the crowd at Capital One, after my Swearing In,” Trump added.
