A year after sharing the 5A tennis state title with Olympus, Timpview is poised to officially dethrone the Olympus dynasty this week.
Including last year’s shared title, the Titans have won five straight titles but the T-Birds head into the tourney this Thursday and Saturday at Liberty Park with a loaded team at all five positions.
Timpview earned the Region 7 top seed in all five positions, led by first singles player Gwen Bryson — who went 12-0 in region play. Bryson was a semifinalist at second singles last year.
The other three region champs who hope to push Bryson for the individual title are Woods Cross’ Sicely Ferreira, Wasatch’s Alysha Damron and East’s Emmie Moore.
Moore was the runner-up to Alta senior Emilee Astle a year ago and the favorite to claim the first singles crown this year.
Timpview’s Avery Pope was the third singles runner-up last year and this year she’s competing at second singles.
Timpview’s only returning champ is Anna Fellers. She was part of last year’s second doubles winning team and this year she’s competing with Rachel Brown at first doubles.
Olympus only qualified one No. 1 seed for the 5A state tournament, Jane Reese at third singles.
Even though Timpview has the most depth to make a run at the team title, there’s a lot of overall depth in 5A this year and it might only take 14 or 15 points to win the state title this year.
