Over the past few weeks as college football teams have decided to opt out of playing bowl games, jokes have swirled that some squads — including the BYU Cougars — should play in two bowls to try to fill up all the slots.

According to Stadium’s Brett McMurphy on Saturday night, the Cougars, “along with the Sun Belt” had talks about doing so before ultimately deciding not to “for various reasons.”

During BYU’s regular season, which saw it go 10-1, it played three of the 10 teams in the Sun Belt Conference, beating Troy and Texas State and losing to Coastal Carolina. The Sun Belt championship game that was set for Saturday between Coastal Carolina and Louisiana was canceled because of COVID-19 problems at Coastal Carolina.
