After having at least a share of the lead through the first two rounds of the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, Utah’s Tony Finau finds himself in a tie for second place heading into Sunday’s final round after running into trouble on the back nine Saturday at Muirfield Village GC.
Finau was passed by Spain’s Jon Rahm, who fired a 4-under-par 68, the best score of the day, to jump into the lead at 12-under-par 204.
A Salt Lake City native who lives in Lehi, Finau started off well with a birdie at No. 4, followed by birdies at 10 and 11 to get to 12 under on the day. However, he made double bogey at No. 12 when his missed the green on the par-3 and then three-putted. He added a bogey at No. 14 when he hit into the water.
He recovered with a birdie at No. 15, but made his second double bogey of the day at No. 17 when he hit his drive into thick rough and hardly advanced his second shot. Then he hit in a rear bunker and took three more to get down.
Finau is tied with Ryan Palmer, who he shared the lead with after 36 holes. They are two shots ahead of former Masters champion Danny Willett and three ahead of Henrik Norlander and Jason Day.
