Former Utah quarterback Brian Johnson was named offensive coordinator at the University of Florida.

The former Ute, who quarterbacked the 2008 Utah football team to an undefeated 13-0 season featuring memorable comeback wins against Oregon State and TCU and a Sugar Bowl win against powerhouse Alabama, was promoted to offensive coordinator just prior to the start of the 2020 season. Previously, Johnson was quarterbacks coach for the Gators but now adds offensive coordinator to his job duties.

“Our entire offensive staff has been together for a really long time,” Johnson told the media. “Excited to make sure that we go out there and compete at a high level every week.”

Florida head coach Dan Mullen will continue to be the primary play-caller on offense, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Mullen was quarterbacks coach at Utah from 2003-04 under Urban Meyer before following Meyer to Florida and becoming offensive coordinator for the Gators from 2005-08. Mullen was hired as head coach of Mississippi State, where he coached the Bulldogs from 2009-17 before becoming Florida’s head coach.

Johnson got his coaching head start as quarterbacks coach for Utah in the 2010 and 2011 seasons before becoming offensive coordinator in 2012 at age 24. He was co-offensive coordinator with Dennis Erickson for the 2013 season before joining Mullen at Mississippi State as the quarterbacks coach for three years before a 2017 stint as offensive coordinator at Houston. In 2018, he reunited with Mullen in Florida as quarterback coach before this most recent promotion.
