BYU runners continue to make their mark on the national distance and middle-distance scene. Over the weekend, they claimed four victories against collegiate and professional runners at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston, two of them with nation-leading times.
Meghan Hunter, a senior from Provo, won the women’s 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.21, breaking the BYU school record and posting the fastest time in the collegiate ranks so far this season. In the process she beat former NCAA champion Roisin Willis and 2024 Olympian Juliet Whittaker.
Whittni Morgan, a former BYU athlete from Panguitch, won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:48.51, the fourth fastest in U.S. history and five seconds faster than her personal best, which was achieved in the Olympic final. Lexy Lowry, a BYU senior, finished fourth in the race with a time of 14:57.63, breaking the BYU school record and becoming the fourth-fastest collegian ever. Courtney Wayment, another former BYU athlete, was 13 seconds behind, in ninth.

Riley Chamberlain, a junior from California, finished third in the mile with a time of 4:26.19, setting a BYU school record and establishing herself as the fifth-fastest collegian ever. She finished in third place behind two Olympic professional runners, Elise Cranny and Gabbi Jennings. Cranny’s time of 4:20.83 made her the sixth fastest American ever. Anna Bennett, the former BYU NCAA champion, was sixth in 4:29.76.
In just the third competition of his collegiate career, Tyler Mathews, a BYU freshman from Arizona, won the 800-meter run with the third-fastest time in BYU history — 1:47.27. He came back less than an hour later and won the 500-meter run with a time of 1:02.75. Mathews set the Arizona state high school record in the 800 as a junior in 2023 of 1:48.72.
