The 2025-2026 high school girls basketball season gets underway this week with the official start of the season on Tuesday. To prepare fans for the upcoming season, the Deseret News has put together capsules for every team in 5A. Every coach was invited to participate and submit information.
The region rankings are based on coaches preseason projections.
There are seven new head basketball coaches in 5A this year: Clay Meryhew (Cyprus), Brooke Bown (Box Elder), Josie Williams (Roy), Dave Nielsen (Skyline), Angela Villa (Pleasant Grove), Aleksa Porter (Salem Hills) and Ted Ballin (Timpview).

Coach comment: As the new head coach, I’m excited about what’s ahead for this group. We return three seniors, including Tabatha Clark, last year’s leading scorer, who will step into her true role as a shooting guard this season. With the addition of 6′6 sophomore Sutton Villa, one of the best rim protectors in the country, Tabatha no longer has to play inside and can use her 6′2 frame to stretch the floor. Sutton’s presence gives us a major defensive anchor and changes the way teams have to attack us.
We’ve also added two new floor generals, the Sikander sisters — Janiece and Aaliyah — who bring pace, leadership, and playmaking. With so many offensive threats around them, they could easily lead the state in assists. Zuri Nordstrom, a powerful combo guard, adds toughness and versatility to an already dynamic lineup.
We’ll likely be the tallest team in the state — and possibly one of the strongest. These girls have worked relentlessly in the weight room with Sports Fit Performance all summer and fall. They’ve come together as a team, and now it’s about finding our rhythm and putting it all together. I’m proud of how far they’ve come, and I’m excited to see what’s next.
2. Wasatch Wasps

Coach comment: We are very excited this season at Payson High. With a good group of veterans and some talented underclassman the Lady Lions should be very competitive again. We have had a successful offseason and become more cohesive as a team. Emmy Hales is one of the best players in Utah and will look to continue her excellent play. Halle Anderson, Sadie Degraffenried, Makinly Renzello, Abby Rowley, Belle Thornton and a few surprises should complement Emmy. If the Lady Lions can stay healthy they could make a deep run.
