A year after winning its fourth straight 6A state championship by 76 strokes, Lone Peak’s girls golf team is in a dog fight for its fifth straight.
Following the opening round of the 6A state tournament on Monday at Davis Park Golf Course, Lone Peak leads herriman by just one stroke.
Lone Peak shot a 317 on the opening day, with Herriman hot on its heels at 318, and Farmington certainly within striking distance at 324. Even Bingham is in the hunt in fourth place after a 329 on Monday.
The second round gets underway on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., with the last groups teeing off at 10:20.
The chase for 6A medalist is still up in the air, but Herriman sophomore Paige Anae is certainly in the most advantageous position after finishing with the only under-par round on Monday.
Anae shot a 2-under 69 and leads the tournament by three srokes over Syracuse sophomore Kai Post, sho shot a 1-over 72.
Anae overcame a double bogey on No. 16 by birdying No. 17 to end her round on a positive now.
The other two golfers within five shots of the lead are Herriman’s Natalie McLane (73) and Bingham’s Stratton Durrant (74).
Defending 6A medalist Saydie Wagner, is one of three golfers along with Farmington’s Aspen Taylor and Lone Peak’s Morgan Thomas who are seven shots back after carding 76s on Monday.
