Not only did Ethan Shuley beat everyone else running the Deseret News Half Marathon on Friday — he also beat everyone who has ever run the race.

His time of 1:00:30 is an all-time record. It was also a personal best, clearing the 1:01:02 he set in Osaka, Japan in January.

The 28-year-old averaged a 4:37 mile pace Friday and led the pack from the first mile all the way to the finish line.

Shuley cleared this year’s competition by more than four and a half minutes. The second- and third- place finishers, respectfully, were 26-year-old Kevin Kirk (1:04:34) and 32-year-old Jordan Cross (1:05:14).

As gratifying as it was to claim the top of the podium by a significant margin at one of Utah’s top races, Shuley still has higher ambitions. At the front of his mind right now is the TCS Syndey Marathon in Sydney, Australia, which takes place at the end of August.

World Athletics ranks Shuley as the No. 244 marathon runner in the world.
