Robert Griffin III has been part of some memorable moments for BYU over the past few years.
He was in the broadcast booth for the Cougars’ double-overtime win over No. 9 Baylor in 2022, along with last season’s rivalry victory over No. 23 Utah.
In addition to his energy on the mic, the former Heisman Trophy winner has become a fan favorite among Cougar Nation for his respect for BYU and vocal online support for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
But the next time Griffin is on the call for a BYU game, it will be with a new partner.
Play-by-play announcer Connor Onion is pairing with Griffin on Fox’s No. 2 college football broadcast team, according to a Tuesday report from Andrew Marchand of The Athletic.
Onion will replace Griffin’s former partner, Jason Benetti, who offered last season’s famed “There’s a Bear on the loose in Provo!” call and is now NBC’s lead Major League Baseball announcer.
During his time at ESPN from 2021-24, Griffin’s primary partners were Mark Jones and Bob Wischusen. Benetti helped usher Griffin into his new role at Fox in 2025, with the duo even calling a late-season NFL game in addition to their college action.
Onion has play-by-play experience with Fox and the Big Ten Network, having called Utah’s 43-10 win over UCLA this past season. He has yet to be assigned to a BYU game, but when he finally is, he’ll have a Provo expert in Griffin by his side.
