Utah gymnastics and Gabrielle Black announced Friday that the five-star recruit has deferred her enrollment at the University of Utah. Black, a Canadian national team member, will instead focus her upcoming efforts on the 2028 Olympic games.
In its shared announcement with Black, Utah gymnastics said, “We’re so proud of Gabrielle Black and excited to cheer her on as she pursues her Olympic dreams with Team Canada!”
Black earned a bronze medal at the Pan Am Games and a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games with team Canada this past summer. She was a highly regarded recruit from the 2026 class.
Black is the second gymnast the Red Rocks have lost this season to deferment with Madison Denlinger opting to remain with her club and train for the LA Games.
Utah still has two freshmen on the roster in four-star recruits Ayla Miller and Léonie Gervais. Miller joins the team from Big Lake, Minnesota, while Gervais is from Quebec, Canada.
The Red Rocks also added two grad transfers who will provide depth and experience. Lilly Tubbs comes to Utah from Washington and Arielle Ward joins the Red Rocks from Illinois.
