Utah Royals FC started off a busy night for Utah soccer fans on Saturday night, claiming a crucial 1-0 win against the Houston Dash at Shell Energy Stadium. The Royals swept the season series against Houston in 2026 NWSL play, and extended its win-streak against the Dash to three games on Saturday.
Back at home, Real Salt Lake’s midseason struggles continued, with the Claret-and-Cobalt falling 2-0 to Eastern Conference opponent New York City FC at America First Field. Amid a chaotic and congested slate of games with numerous injuries, the loss extended RSL’s winless run to 11 games, the fourth longest streak in Club history.
Tanaka makes history in Royals’ 1-0 win
A complete team performance gave Utah a narrow 1-0 win on Saturday, with both sides of the ball operating at high levels. On offense, Japanese international Mina Tanaka scored her ninth goal of the season, tying Club legend Amy Rodriguez for the most in a single season by a Royals player. Tanaka also broke club records for career game-winning goals (6) and single-season game-winning goals (5) with her finish against Houston. Tanaka’s goal was assisted by Nuria Rábano, who, with six career assists, is now tied with Gunny Jónsdóttir and Veronica ‘Vero’ Boquete for second in Club history (behind Cloé Lacasse’s 11).
Jameese Joseph made her Royals’ debut on Saturday, subbing on for Kiana Palacios in the 67th minute. Joseph, who joined Utah earlier this week from Chicago Stars FC, made an instant impact, participating in the Royals’ game-winning goal in the 69th minute. With playoffs quickly approaching, Joseph is sure to be a vital addition to an already potent Royals’ attack.
RSL’s woes continue in 2-0 loss to NYCFC
While America First Field had been a fortress for the Claret-and-Cobalt for a majority of the season, Saturday’s loss extended RSL’s recent struggles when playing at home. The Utah side is now on a four-game home winless streak, the longest since the 2016 and 2017 crossover, holding a 7-2-3 MLS record when playing in the Wasatch Front. RSL also failed to score at home on Saturday for the first time since July 19, 2025 against FC Cincinnati.
The home side’s night was highlighted by the debut of Utah native and RSL Academy product Taylor Booth, who subbed on to make his first RSL and MLS appearance in the 76th minute after spending eight years in Europe. Booth is among several summer reinforcements the Claret-and-Cobalt hope to integrate into the squad in the coming weeks as it pushes for a playoff spot.

The match got off to a passive start in the first half, with neither team creating clear looks on goal. The Royals were more effective offensively than their Texan opponent, generating eight shots (four on target) as opposed to Houston’s two (zero on target). Utah’s leading goal scorer, Mina Tanaka, was closest to finding an opener in the 39th minute, firing a shot to the bottom right corner that was denied by Jane Campbell.
The Royals picked up the pace to start the second half, creating a plethora of scoring opportunities. In the 67th minute, Jameese Joseph subbed on to make her Royals debut after joining the Club last Monday, injecting the offense with new energy. Two minutes later, Utah got the opener, with Tanaka sliding to put away a low-driven cross into the middle of the box from Nuria Rábano for a 1-0 lead. The Royals’ backline was solid all night, holding the Dash to zero shots on goal for the first time since Sept. 14, 2025, also against Utah.
With the home side unable to get an equalizer, the Royals claimed a crucial three points away from home Saturday, further solidifying its position in a frantic NWSL playoff race.

The Claret-and-Cobalt got off to a quick start Saturday, putting pressure on the NYCFC defense in the early minutes. The home side forced a number of early saves from USMNT goalkeeper Matt Freese, who made a double-save in the 16th minute — parrying efforts from Luca Moisa and Saba Lobjanidze — followed by two more crucial stops in the ensuing moments.
The visitors drew first blood in the 41st minute, scoring with a planned set piece from the top of the box. NYCFC designated player Nicolás Fernandez checked in to the free-kick taker, and after a touch to set himself up, finished with a curling left-footed shot into the top-left corner. Despite an impressive display from RSL in the first half, vital saves from Freese and a long-range effort from Fernandez gave the visitors a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
In the 62nd, NYCFC doubled its lead against the run of play, converting on a quick counter attack with a goal from Luighi. Despite maintaining more possession and doubling the East Coast side’s shots on goal (six to three), the visitor’s decisiveness was ultimately the difference in Saturday’s 2-0 loss.
