Mountain View boys cross country continued its recent dominance at the 4A state meet on Wednesday in running away with a sixth straight championship, while an unlikely team walked home with the girls trophy.
Orem’s girls, which hadn’t won a state championship since 2002, emerged victorious from a deep group of contenders at Sugar House Park, tallying 96 points to finish comfortably ahead of runner-up Timpanogos’ 132 points.
Mountain View’s boys, meanwhile, obliterated the field, winning with 27 points, placing four runners inside the top seven and five in the top 15. Pine View tallied 121 points to finish second
“It’s been fun because the kids have really bought into the culture of the team,” said Mountain View coach Mike Strauss. “Six years ago, there’s a couple kids that just started breaking through — they’re at BYU now — and we were just starting to tease times that were competitive at the state level, and the young kids just bought into the culture and the vibe and the excitement of running together.
“It’s been super fun to be a part of. It definitely has that family vibe.”
Mountain View’s top five finishers on Wednesday were all seniors, led by Kyle Chipman and Daniel Anderson who pulled away in the final mile for a convincing 1-2 finish.
Chipman won with a time of 15:17.56, followed by Anderson in 15:26.27. The next closest runner was 19 seconds back.
For Chipman, it was an extra satisfying result following a runner-up finish at the state meet last season.
“I didn’t want to let that happen again, so the whole like this last month working up to state, I’ve been mentally preparing myself for how bad it’s going to hurt and what I needed to do,” Chipman said.
And how bad did it hurt?
“It hurt pretty bad,” he said.
With about a mile to go, he started to pull away from his teammate, which Chipman admitted is always tough to do.
“I want nothing more than him to win, but I want to win more, so it sucks to have to beat him, but I have to beat him,” he said.
Mountain View’s other scoring runners were Maverick Dutson in fifth, Jesse Eager in seventh and Peter Hedengren in 15th.
For a brief period on Wednesday, it appeared Mountain View had swept the boys and girls individual state championships after freshman Susan Hedengren won the 4A girls race with a 17-second cushion over Mountain Crest senior Lily Knowles.
Hedengren, however, was later disqualified.
Strauss said two officials deemed Hedengren had been aided by an unofficial pacer during a stretch around the lake in the final 800 meters. Two officials saw someone running with Hedengren outside the ropes beyond the five paces allotted, and Strauss said because it was a judgement call on the officials’ part he couldn’t appeal, according to the rule book.
“She’s out front. I don’t feel like it was a huge assistance, or any assistance, really, but a disqualification seems a little bit abrupt as a consequence, but it is what it is,” Strauss said.
Susan Hedengren is the younger sister of former Timpview standout and current BYU sensation Jane Hedengren.
Strauss along with teammates and family could be seen consoling Susan Hedengren after the race.
“It stings, but she’s a strong athlete. She’s a good girl. She understands the predicament,” he said.
For Knowles, roughly 20 minutes after assuming she’d finished second, she learned of the disqualification.
“I feel very relieved. I feel like I worked hard, and it’s just made my day even better,” Knowles said. “It started how I wanted it to. It started to hurt in like the second mile, like usual, but I feel like I was able to finish strong, so it was a well-executed race.”
Knowles finished with a winning time of 18:11.79, followed by Green Canyon’s Lizzie McFarland in second with a time of 18:18.20.
Orem’s top finisher en route to the elusive team title was freshman Sydney Eraso, who came across in seventh place. It’s been a busy fall for Eraso, as she also competed in girls tennis and placed second at the state tournament in 4A first singles earlier this month.
Orem’s other finishers were in 14th, 16th, 19th and 40th, which in the ultra-competitive 4A was good enough this year.
“This season has been so hard, and we’ve just had to work so hard together and it’s just awesome to see it pay off,” said Orem coach Marie Glahn. “To see the kids do everything and sacrifice for each other, like, this was full team.
“Even JV, we had a JV plan yesterday of how we were going to support varsity to make it a whole team experience, and they did it today, and honestly all season. It’s been an incredible season.”
Glahn is in her second season as Orem’s coach. She took over the program 14 months ago after longtime head coach Andy Jacobs passed away from a heart attack.
Jacobs’ son Ty has continued as one of the assistant coaches, and Glahn said, “it’s so cool having his son with us and being a part of this.”
Orem’s other scoring runners were Kate Adams, Callie Latham, Liv Trimble and Brittany Jensen.
