Inmates took over parts of a regional jail facility Monday morning after overpowering correctional staff in eastern North Carolina.
But the siege at Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center in Windsor ended hours after it began when law enforcement came on the scene, per The Associated Press.
The takeover
At the time of the takeover, three guards and 88 inmates were in the facility. One guard managed to escape, and negotiations led to the release of the other two, as well as 80 inmates.

The takeover that occurred around 5 a.m. ET was never a danger to the public, according to Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin.
Details regarding why or how the takeover took place were not immediately released.
What happened to the inmates and staff?

By early afternoon, the facility was cleared by the FBI and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
“All inmates and staff are safe and accounted for, and those who sustained injuries have received treatment,” the state bureau said in a statement.
Inmates have been transferred to different locations while the Windsor facility is assessed for damages.
“Right now we have a lot going on that we’re trying to get under control,” Ruffin said. “I will release that information to the public as soon as I can.”
The 90-bed jail, which houses pretrial detainees and short-term inmates, according to AP, is located 120 miles east of Raleigh.
