Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfum, who discovered the Ebola virus in 1976, has been busy searching for potential viruses that could spell the end of humanity, according to CNN.

Muyembe told CNN as a part of a long-form piece that he has been searching for viruses that could hurt the human population. These viruses are “zoonotic disease,” which can cross between humans and animals.

According to CNN, the potential viruses would come a rodent or insect. The diseases would be similar to “yellow fever, various forms of influenza, rabies, brucellosis and Lyme disease,” which have all caused pandemics in the past.

  • “We are now in a world where new pathogens will come out,” Muyembe told CNN. “And that’s what constitutes a threat for humanity.”
