A new mysterious monolith has appeared on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom just weeks after monoliths showed up in Utah, Romania, California and the Netherlands.
What happened?
Residents on the Isle of Wight, an island off the south coast of England, discovered the monolith over the weekend.
Resident Alexia Fishwick discovered the monolith when she was on a walk on the beach Sunday, according to BBC News. She said it was ”really quite magical” to find the new monolith.
- “I’d read about the one in Utah and then Romania, so I knew the significance. Many people took no notice of it.”
She said she thought the original monolith photos had been photoshopped.
DJ Rob da Bank, who lives on the island, told BBC News he has some thoughts about the origins of the monolith.
- “I’m not sure if it’s aliens, a Coldplay PR stunt or a local mirror dealer drumming up trade, but it got us all down the beach anyway.”
The monolith craze
The Utah monolith came almost out of nowhere and we still don’t fully understand it. A team of biologists discovered the monolith about two weeks ago, prompting a social media reaction from all over the world. Later, another monolith appeared in Romania and then one showed up in California. A fourth one later showed up outside of Oudehorne, a village in the province of Friesland, according to Newsweek.
It’s unclear what these monoliths mean. Some consider them to be an art project that shows us our reaction to nature, aliens or something bigger. Otherwise, we might never know the origins of the monoliths.
