Two cruises ships anchored outside of Miami on Thursday with sick crew members on board, according to USA Today.
What happened:
- The two cruise ships — the Costa Magica and the Costa Favolosa — were given permission to anchor at the port of Miami. Health officials sent boats to shore.
- Six crew members left the Magica and seven left the Favolosa, according to USA Today.
- “The U.S. Coast Guard is facilitating medical evacuations Thursday after requests were made by Costa Magica and Costa Favolosa for life-critical care ashore for multiple crew members presenting with respiratory symptoms consistent with pneumonia and bronchitis,” the command said in a statement posted to Miami-Dade County’s website.
- All of the crew members will be sent to a local hospital to be treated, tested and put under observation. Some crew members said they experienced flu-like symptoms — similar to what people experience with the coronavirus — while on board, according to USA Today.
- Potentially 30 crew members had symptoms related to the flu, according to Carnival, which owns the Costa line, NPR reports.
- Roger Frizzell, spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line, parent company for Costa Cruises, told USA Today that the ships “do not have official clearance for entry into the Port of Miami.”
Another ship:
- Holland America’s Zaandam is expected to arrive at Fort Lauderdale on Monday, according to NPR. The ship has about 42 sick passengers and crew members on board.
