How many Americans plan to get the coronavirus vaccine when (and if) it becomes available? Less than half of the country, according to a new poll from NBC News and SurveyMonkey.

What’s happening:

The new poll — which comes from the NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Tracking Poll — found that the majority of respondents felt unsure about getting the vaccine. Some said they ruled out the vaccine completely.

  • 44% of Americans said they’d get the vaccine
  • 22% said they wouldn’t.
  • 32% said they’re unsure.

the majority of Democrats, seniors, Asians, people making more than $100,000 and college students aid they would get a vaccine.

  • 37% of those making under $50,000 said they’d get a vaccine.
  • 26% said they wouldn’t.
  • 35% said they were unsure.

Numbers improved when salary increased. Those in the $50,000 to $99,999 range played out like this:

  • 45% said they would get a vaccine.
  • 22% said they wouldn’t.
  • 32% said they were unsure.

The bigger picture:

  • The race of a vaccine remains underway. It’s unclear when the vaccine will be readily available. Health experts have long said the vaccine won’t be completely ready until the end of 2020, and that’s assuming the trials go well. There’s some belief that the vaccine wouldn’t be ready until spring or summer 2021 as well.
