At least 23 were injured, their injuries varying, in a mass shooting event on Sunday at 9 p.m. in Edmond, Oklahoma, as law enforcement continues to look for a potential suspect or suspects on Monday, according to The Associated Press.
Local Oklahoma news station KOCO 5 News said the event took place at Arcadia Lake, about 20 miles north of Oklahoma City. The lake is a popular boating and camping recreation area, with biking and running trails for Edmond residents. A flyer circulating on social media, which appears to be the event where the shooting took place, features an invitation to “Sunday Funday” at Arcadia Lake from 6 p.m. to midnight.
Several witnesses told the local news outlets that the party was a fun environment until an argument broke out that turned into a fight, then into gunfire.
The lakeside party reportedly drew young adults and was unsanctioned, according to Edmond Police, meaning no one had permission to use the site and should not have been there.
Law enforcement arrived on the scene after receiving multiple 911 calls from the event, Edmond Police said in a press release on Monday.
The press release said that no suspect information would be shared at the time, but that the threat to public safety is not a concern.
“Ten people were taken to the Integris Health Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City,” Julia Cannedy with Integris Health’s media relations department told USA Today.
“Three were taken to Integris Health Edmond Hospital in Edmond,” Cannedy added. “Of those, seven people were admitted to the hospitals and, as of May 4, three people were in critical condition, and four people were in serious condition. ... The six other victims taken to the hospitals were treated and released.”
Edmond Mayor Mark Nash assured Edmond residents that the city, home to around 100,000 residents, remains safe.
“Last night’s incident at Arcadia Lake was a tragedy, and our thoughts are with those who were injured. We are grateful for the swift response of first responders and law enforcement, who acted quickly to secure the area and begin their investigation,” he said in a public statement. “Edmond continues to be one of the most desirable and safest communities in Oklahoma and across the country. Incidents like this are rare, and they will not define us. We are already reviewing park operations, policies, and security measures to ensure we continue to meet the high standards our residents expect and deserve.”
