FARMINGTON — An 18-year-old snowmobiler died Saturday after being buried in an avalanche near Farmington Peak.
After search and rescue crews dug him out of the snow, he was flown to University of Utah Hospital where he later died, according to the Davis County Sheriff’s Office.
Police first received a 911 call around 1:45 p.m. Saturday. Search and rescue teams flew to the scene in a helicopter and arrived within minutes.
The man was in the canyon with his father. He was wearing an inflatable backpack, but it deployed improperly. It took about 30 minutes to find and dig him out of the snow, according to the Davis County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials did not release his identity Saturday.
Avalanche danger in the Farmington area was “considerable” Saturday, according to the Utah Avalanche Center.
