HUNTSVILLE, Weber County — An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday for a Huntsville man accused of killing his wife.

Scott William Russell, 53, was charged Wednesday in 2nd District Court with murder, a first-degree felony, and multiple other charges.

Just after 9 p.m. Tuesday, Weber County sheriff’s deputies were called to an unincorporated part of the county near Huntsville on a report that Russell had shot his wife, according to charging documents. The call to emergency dispatchers was made by a person who had received the information from Russell’s son, who lives out of state.

The son reported that his father “was acting very erratic on the phone call and kept repeating statements. Scott repeatedly told his son that he was going to come to his state to give him a hug and other strange statements like how Scott’s ‘soul was on the line,’” the charges state. The son reported that Russell’s behavior “very strange and out of character.”

The son then asked his father about his wife. Russell called out to his wife and his son could hear them talking, police say.

Russell asked his wife if he was “high” and his wife responded that he was indeed high, according to the charges. The son said he then heard his father “making noises and he stated that some of these sounds he believed to be the sound of ammunition and a gun cocking.”

The son told police there were periods of silence mixed with commotion, followed by what sounded like a door slamming and then more silence before his father picked up the phone again.

“Scott’s son was very concerned at this point as Scott’s erratic behavior increased and he continued to repeat incoherent statements,” according to the charges. ”Scott again spoke about coming to meet his son and told him that he was going to do so because he would be going to prison. Scott’s son asked him about the victim again and Scott told him that he shot the victim.”

Russell then claimed he was not serious, but a few moments later said that he was.

“Scott’s son told Scott that he loved him and Scott replied that he loved his son too and then ended the phone call by telling his son, ‘I’ll see you in hell!!’ the charges state.

Deputies who arrived at the house found the victim deceased with five gunshot wounds “in the back of her body, including one at the base of her skull,” according to the court documents. The husband was not there.

The woman's name has not yet been released.

Eight shell casings were recovered near the body, and more bullet holes were found in the wall of a bathroom, according to police.

The Weber County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that investigators believe Russell was driving a black 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser with black rims and Utah license plate G143AP.

“At this time there is reason to believe that Scott William Russell is heading to Colorado from Utah,” the sheriff’s office stated, while warning that he should be considered armed and dangerous.

In addition to murder, Russell was also charged with four counts of firing a gun, a second-degree felony; possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony; drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 801-778-6631.
