The loser of Sri Lanka's presidential election, Sirima Bandaranaike, has shunned the hand of reconciliation offered by winner Ranasinghe Premadasa and demanded a new poll in areas where violence stopped voting. Her supporters on Wednesday said Bandaranaike refused to admit defeat.

Prime Minister Premadasa was declared the winner on Tuesday after a bitter election fight and quickly sought reconciliation with his political rivals so they could work together on the Indian Ocean island's problems of terrorism and poverty.The government is battling Tamil rebels in the north and Marxist militants in southern and central areas.
