Two Sikhs shouted a religious battle cry moments before they were hanged Friday for the 1984 assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, authorities said. The executions prompted threats of massacres by Sikh militants. Heavily armed police and paramilitary units were on alert in New Delhi, as well as in Punjab and neighboring states of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. Some scattered violence was reported. Satwant Singh, Gandhi's bodyguard, and Kehar Singh were pronounced dead less than a half-hour after they were taken from their death row cells and marched to the gallows. According to a Home Ministry official, Kehar Singh proclaimed his innocence, and Satwant Singh said he had no regrets.
