A cyclone killed 17 people in eastern India and then blew across the border to Bangladesh, where 15 more people died, officials and news reports said Saturday.

Winds racing at 80 mph hit the Indian coast late Friday, leaving more than 50,000 people homeless, the Press Trust of India news agency said.Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta of West Bengal state told reporters 15 people died when at least 10,000 mud and straw houses collapsed in Midnapore, the most severely hit district.

But PTI quoted district police chief Ashok Abrol as saying 17 people were killed in Midnapore, 75 miles southwest of the state capital, Calcutta.
