NBC topped the three major networks by claiming 103 of the Emmy nominations announced Thursday while CBS's cowboy mini-series "Lonesome Dove" led all programs with 18 nominations.
CBS was named 95 times and ABC trailed with 85 nominations when the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the finalists for the 41st annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Thirty-two nominations went to PBS. The fledgling Fox network received 12 and HBO had eight.The awards will be televised by the Fox Broadcasting Co. Sept. 17 from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
The academy announced that Lucille Ball was voted a posthumous Governor's Award for her lifetime of work on television.
"L.A. Law" was the top drama series vote-getter for NBC for the third year with 17 nominations and ABC's nostalgic "The Wonder Years," named 1988's top comedy, had the most nominations in that category this year with 14. ABC's yuppie program "thirtysomething," last year's outstanding drama series, had 13 nominations.
"Lonesome Dove," based on Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, was the overall leader with 18 nominations, including best mini-series. The stars, Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, both were nominated for best actor in a mini-series while Diane Lane and Anjelica Huston were selected in the best actress competition and Simon Wincer was chosen in the best director category.
The ABC mini-series "War and Remembrance" logged in second with 15.
CBS's newcomer "Murphy Brown" received 11 nominations. Fox Broadcasting picked up 10 of its 12 nominations for "The Tracey Ullman Show" and NBC's "Golden Girls" also was named 10 times.
"Star Trek: The Next Generation" was the top vote-getter among syndicated series with eight nominations. Syndicated programs received a total of 21 nominations.
"My Name Is Bill W.," a "Hallmark Hall of Fame" special starring James Garner and James Woods about the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, received seven nominations.
There were a total of 364 nominations in 90 categories for the period June 1, 1988, to May 31, 1989.
The Disney Channel and MTV each picked up a pair of nominations, and Lifetime, TBS, TNT and USA cable networks received one nomination each.
