New Utah football coach Ron McBride announced Friday the hiring of nine assistant coaches, just two of whom are holdovers from the Jim Fassel regime.
"I'm extremely pleased with the caliber of people I've been able to assemble to work with me here at the University of Utah," McBride said.New Ute assistant offensive coaches include offensive coordinator Danny Henson, offensive backs coach Sam Papalii, offensive line coach Tim Davis and wide receivers coach Brad Childress.
Defensively, McBride has hired Tim Hundley as his defensive coordinator, Fred Graves as his defensive ends coach and Greg McMackin as defensive backs coach.
Doug Penner will work as a recruiting specialist and academic coordinator, while Sean McNabb will serve as recruiting coordinator.
Both Graves and McNabb have been retained from the previous Utah staff. Graves has coached for eight years at Utah as the receivers coach. He also coached at New Mexico State.
McNabb completed his 13th year as a Ute coach in 1989 coaching the tight ends and special teams. In his new capacity, he will coordinate Utah's recruiting effort.
Assisting McNabb will be Penner, who will also be in charge of coordinating Utah players' academics. He was a graduate assistant at Arizona in 1989.
Henson comes to Utah from San Jose State, where he was the quarterbacks and receivers coach for five years. Besides coordinating the offense, he will also work closely with Utah's quarterbacks and receivers.
Papalii coached with McBride at Arizona for three years after serving a stint as an assistant at Hawaii.
Davis, a Utah graduate, was a starting offensive lineman at Utah when McBride was the Utes' offensive line coach. He later served as a graduate assistant with McBride at Utah and later as an assistant coach at Wisconsin. He was an assistant at Idaho State last year.
Hundley joins the Ute staff after eight years as defensive coordinator at Oregon State where his main emphasis was the inside linebackers.
As offensive coordinator at Northern Arizona, Childress-coached teams hold 67 NCAA, Big Sky Conference and school records. He has coaching experience with the NFL's Indianapolis Colts and Illinois of the Big Ten.
McMackin leaves as the head coach of Oregon Tech to come to Utah. He has both professional and collegiate experience after serving as an assistant coach with the Jacksonville Bulls and the Denver Gold of the USFL. At the major college level, he has been an assistant at Stanford, San Jose State and Idaho. He compiled four straight winning seasons at Oregon Tech and led the Owls to a 24-14-1 record.
