George Burman, president of American Gilsonite Co., 136 E. South Temple, has resigned effective July 1 to become dean of the School of Business at Syracuse University in New York.

Prior to becoming president of American Gilsonite in 1988, Burman held several positions in the oil and mining business working for Chevron and Gulf Oil Co. He also taught as Carnegie-Melon University for two years prior to joining Gulf Oil Co.A former football player for the Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Rams and Washington Redskins in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Burman served on the boards of directors of the Utah Mining Association, Salt Lake Boys and Girls Clubs and the Utah Symphony.

American Gilsonite is a wholly owned subsidiary of Chevron and mines gilsonite in eastern Utah for use in making inks, paints, resins and other specialty chemical markets.
