Quarterback Mike Romo, who helped revive SMU's football program from an NCAA "death penalty," has been sidelined for the season with a knee injury.

Romo, the Mustangs' starting quarterback since 1989, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the third quarter of Saturday's 45-7 loss to No. 11 Baylor. He sustained the injury during a 21-yard run.Dr. John Baker, an orthopedic surgeon, examined Romo on Monday and said the player could return next season.
