Firing Lindy Infante as coach of the Green Bay Packers was the toughest decision of Ron Wolf's 29-year NFL career.
Infante was respected by his players, he worked with charities in the Green Bay area and he was NFL coach of the year just two seasons ago.But after a four-week evaluation of games and film, Wolf, the team's new general manager, saw a team that had trouble doing the most important thing any team can do - win.
So on Sunday, he fired Infante, who was 24-40 in four years, and then turned his attention to finding a successor.
"We have to let the record speak for itself, and I think it does," Wolf said. "The biggest thing is the fact the team could not win the game."
The top candidate is former New York Giants coach Bill Parcells, now an NBC commentator. The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported Monday that Wolf plans to negotiate with Parcells in the next three or four days. Press-Gazette sources say that Parcells' salary requirement is in the $1-million-a-year range but that the Packers would meet it. Infante had three years left on his contract.
