Dennis Franchione, who coached Southwest Texas State for the past two seasons, was named head coach at New Mexico. He succeeds Mike Sheppard, who was fired last month after five straight losing seasons.

Franchione, 40, has an 80-19-2 record in nine seasons as a head coach. In two seasons at Southwest Texas State, a Division I-AA school, his teams were 6-5 in 1990 and 7-4 this year.
