Johnny Carson, in his first "Tonight Show" broadcast since the death of his son Rick in an auto accident, fought back tears as he eulogized the 39-year-old photographer and showed examples of his work.
Richard Wolcott Carson, 39, died June 21 when his vehicle plunged down an embankment in Cayucos. He had gone there to take pictures of the coast."First of all I want to thank all of you who were so very thoughtful, compassionate and sympathetic with your letters," Carson said during Wednesday's show.
"I'm going to show you a picture of Rick," he said, "because the picture in papers after the accident was the one on his driver's license. I don't think any of you would want to be remembered by the photo on your driver's license."
Carson noted that his close friend Michael Landon, who was then suffering from cancer, had called to express his sympathy after Rick Carson's death.
`A week later Michael Landon was dead. These have not been the most happy several weeks," he added.
