The Japanese company that gave the world the Walkman personal stereo could soon be offering a headset video screen.
Sony Corp. said it has developed a prototype "Visortron," consisting of a headset containing tiny liquid crystal displays and headphones. The device, worn like ski goggles, has two 0.7 inch screens just in front of the eyes.
Sony spokesman Jun Shimo-yamada said the 8.8 ounce Visortron would be aimed mainly at people on long journeys on planes, buses and trains.
Some airlines already offer passengers small screens to choose their in-flight viewing, but the headset will allow greater concentration, he said.
Development of a commercial model will have to wait at least a year or two, until the completion of thorough checks on health effects, he said.
