The Kalashnikov-wielding gunman who killed six people and wounded six in a door-to-door rampage in southern Switzerland last week has committed suicide, hanging himself his jail cell, police said Tuesday.

Erminio Criscione, 37, used the time when his guards were being changed on Monday evening and he wasn't being watched to tie a linen cloth to his window bars and hang himself, police said.Police and paramedics tried unsuccessfully to revive him, they said.

Criscione had been watched closely since he surrendered in tears after the Wednesday evening rampage in the villages of Rivera, Origlio and Massagno near Lugano in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, police said.

They said they took extra precautions against suicide even though Criscione hadn't expressed such intentions as recently as a Monday afternoon interrogation.
