Mark Quinney will compete in his second NCAA men's tennis championships starting this Wednesday, but this is his first time for BYU.
The 5-11, 165 Cougar junior from Eugene, Ore., will join Utah's Lindsay Rawstorne as part of 36 at-large selections and 120 other players participating in the team championships at Athens, Ga.Quinney was the Pac-10 doubles champion at UCLA and played for the Bruins two years ago at the NCAA Championships before transferring to BYU.
The latest Volvo Tennis/Collegiate Rankings have Rawstorne, from Cap D'Agne, France, ranked 23rd and Quinney ranked 83rd.
Quinney, who has a 28-9 record thanks to a 110 mph serve, is on a four-match winning streak, including a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Rawstorne in the final match of the Western Athletic Conference Championships earlier this month in Salt Lake City where BYU placed fourth. Rawstorne, the WAC player of the year, beat Quinney at the beginning of May, 6-4, 6-0 and has a 12-3 record.
"Mark is playing well right now and he is capable of beating anybody in the country," says BYU Coach Jim Osborne.
Among Quinney's top victories this season is a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Stanford's Michael Flannagan.
