A top-level shakeup has made Doug Moe coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, replacing Jim Lynam who took over Gene Shue's job as general manager.
Shue became director of player-personnel.Moe, NBA coach of the year in 1987-88 with the Denver Nuggets, steps into the job amid speculation about the future makeup of the club, including the status of superstar Charles Barkley.
"Doug was Jim's choice to replace him as head coach," owner Harold Katz said in a statement.
"He is a coach that Jim always respected and when Jim mentioned Doug to me, I felt the same way."
Katz said Lynam expressed interest in becoming a general manager and he decided to make a change at the end of the season in which the 76ers finished 35-47 and missed the playoffs.
"We'll play an up-tempo style of basketball and we'll try to attack at both ends of the basketball court," Moe said.
In 13-plus years with Denver and the San Antonio Spurs, Moe has a 609-492 career record. He is one of only 11 NBA coaches with more than 600 victories.
Moe, 53, was 432-357 in 10 seasons at Denver. He coached the Nuggets, who fired him Sept. 5, 1990, to two Midwest Division titles.
Katz said before the announcement today that it would be "perfect for us. It will be something we'll be able to build on and regroup."
Lynam, 50, had a 194-173 record as the head coach of the 76ers. Prior to his five seasons in Philadelphia, he coached for close to two seasons with the San Diego-Los Angeles Clippers, compiling a 52-91 record.
Assistant coach Fred Carter will stay with the club.
