Meanwhile storm-swollen rivers in northern France overflowed their banks, leaving hundreds of people homeless and thousands without electricity on Christmas Day, while residents along the Rhine and other rivers in Germany spent Christmas Day mopping up and evaluating the damage from the worst flooding in that region since 1926. Rain turned to snow in Germany Saturday, creating a white Christmas and chaos on the roads.
