Victoria's Secret, the lingerie merchant, has gone platinum five times, finding a new listening public for the London Symphony Orchestra.
In the music business, going platinum is a distinction earned by a recording when it sells a million or more copies. They say there are only 10 recordings that have gone platinum in the history of classical music.Victoria's Secret has produced a series of five recordings with the famous London orchestra, called "Classics by Request," that have now sold more than 5 million copies. The company began to sell the recordings under that title because the stores' mostly young women shoppers liked the classical selections they heard playing in the stores so much they started asking to buy recordings of the music.
There's been a new record each year since 1989, featuring music by composers ranging from Handel, Bach and Schubert to the American Samuel Barber.
