The American Fork Police Department is giving motorists an unusual holiday gift.

In a program that began Christmas Day and continues through New Year's Eve, the police won't give tickets for not using seat belts and child restraints.Officers are issuing warnings instead, and giving out brochures on the seat-belt law.

American Fork police Lt. Gary Caldwell said citations for other violations will be issued by officers as usual this week.

Caldwell said that in a recent survey, officers found local compliance to seat-belt usage was 22 percent during the day and close to 65 percent at night.
