Award-winning author Toni Morrison said Monday all her manuscripts from her earliest writings were lost in a fire that destroyed her country home on the Hudson River.

Her son, Slade Kevin Morrison, told firefighters he thought the Christmas Day blaze could have been sparked by an ember from a fireplace near a sofa. It took more than 100 firefighters more than five hours to put it out.The winner of the Nobel and Pulitzer prizes for literature was in Princeton when the fire began. She surveyed the damage Saturday.

Fire officials said the blaze destroyed the four-story colonial home.
