Art classes will be offered to children of elementary and middle-school age for seven consecutive Saturdays beginning Jan. 22 by the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery located on the Southern Utah University campus.
The gallery will also offer workshops on each of three Saturdays for students in the sixth grade and up.Children in the first through third grades will meet for classes each Saturday through March 5 from 8-9 a.m. "and will be exploring their creative appetites with a smorgasbord of media, each week creating something new and different," Mandy Brooks, SUU director of museums and galleries, said.
Students in grades four through six will be introduced to a different artist each week in their classes to learn about the artist's style and methods. Students will be taught how the artist expressed himself or herself with a particular medium and will paint, draw, or sculpt a piece of art that relates to the artist's work. That age group will meet from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Course work for students in grades seven through nine is designed to reach and help the child who loves art. Improving drawing skills by opening up new concepts and ideas and learning how to be more perceptive to the environment will be priorities. Classes will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
A fee of $35, which includes all materials, will be charged for classes for the youngest age group. The two older groups will be charged $45 for the seven weeks of instruction.
Class sizes will be limited, so early registration is suggested. Fees can be refunded up to the first day of class. For more information, or to register children, parents may call the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery at 586-5432.
