Nephi has contributed $50 to the Salt Creek Taxi Co. to help provide free rides for residents during the holidays.
Bud Hansen, owner and operator of the city's only taxi company, has proposed providing rides for anyone in Nephi, Levan and Mona for nine days."The service will be for anyone who calls," said Hansen. Elderly people who do not like to drive can benefit from the service as well as young mothers and other area residents.
Hansen also hopes those who drink during the holidays will call the taxi and not try to drive.
"It will be a good present for the residents of Nephi," said Richard Paxman, council member.
The service started Christmas Eve and runs to 6 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1.
Hansen said Juab County also contributed $50, which will help cover his expenses.
Hansen will still charge those who want to be taken outside the service area. For example, he will charge regular rates for trips to the Salt Lake airport.
