In the month since The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced it would donate an old building to help fight gang violence, at least 10 groups have applied for ownership.

Michael Andrews, Salt Lake City's director of youth relations, said Tuesday he expects to hear from more groups in coming weeks. Andrews is charged with researching and interviewing applicants. The LDS Church will make the final decision as to which group receives the building.Church officials have declined to identify the building but have said it is a "surplus" building that is being replaced by a newer one.

Andrews, whose job is to coordinate all programs aimed at reducing youth problems, said the donation will be made to a group that is dedicated to preventing and solving those problems. He especially is interested in helping homeless youth.
