The Salt Lake County sheriff's office is treating the Thursday night death of a 14-year-old boy as a homicide.

At 9:15 p.m., deputy sheriffs were called to Mt. View Apartments, 4525 S. 1175 West, to an apparent shooting, Lt. Kevin Taylor said. Upon arrival the deputies found the boy, name withheld, in an upstairs apartment bedroom dead of multiple stab wounds to the chest."There were signs of a struggle in the apartment and we have reason to believe this was a homicide," Taylor said. "We have no eyewitnesses."

The boy was babysitting a 2-month-old cousin when he was killed, Taylor said. The boy's mother said she returned home from some errands and found her son dead and the baby missing. The baby was later located with its parents, who were taken into custody and questioned.

The incident is not believed to be gang related, Taylor said.
