A Cottonwood Heights man was charged Thursday with aggravated arson, a first-degree felony, after he tried to kill himself Wednesday, court documents show.

The man, 36, told police he started a fire at his residence near 7100 S. 2700 East on Dec. 27 in order to commit suicide, court documents state. The house sustained $5,000 damage. Bail was set at $35,000.
