Rocker Elton John has broken Elvis Presley's record for number of consecutive years with a Top 40 hit on the national singles charts.

His latest, "The Simple Life," makes it 24 years in a row on the pop charts for John.John's first Top 40 hit was "Your Song" in December 1970. In January 1992, he tied Presley's record with "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," re-recorded as a duet with George Michael, and had a second single on the charts, "The One," later last year.

"The Simple Life" holds the No. 40 spot on next week's Billboard magazine "Hot 100 Singles," and John's representatives say it's on the rise.
