Legendary screen star Jimmy Stewart missed a party to celebrate his 85th birthday because he wasn't feeling well.
However, the actor's wife and other family members attended Saturday's celebration, which was thrown by St. John's Hospital and Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif. The more than 800 guests included Dinah Shore, Shirley Jones and former President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy.
Stewart, who turned 85 on Thursday, was released from St. John's Hospital in March after treatment for an irregular heartbeat. He also had to back out of a party in March to kick off the 12th annual Jimmy Stewart Relay Marathon fund-raiser for the hospital.
Stewart won an Oscar for "The Philadelphia Story" in 1940 and was nominated for four other pictures, including the Frank Capra classics, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and "It's A Wonderful Life."
Proceeds from the dinner - tickets sold for $500, $250 and $150 apiece - will be used to buy a fetal monitoring system for St. John's, where Stewart was treated about two months ago for an irregular heartbeat.
